La Cala

One of the most charming villages on the Costa del Sol is without question La Cala de Mijas. Situated in a bend on the coast between Elviria and Fuengirola, originating as a fishing village it offers a beachside setting along with Andalusian charm.

The sandy beach and coastal promenade that extend from here make it possible to skirt the coast for kilometres in either direction, but you will also want to linger in the village itself and stroll through its charming streets and traditional squares until you come across a typical eatery or café. The town is known for its vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals, making it a great place to experience Spanish culture and get to know people. There are also several top golf courses in the area, including La Cala Golf offering 1st class courses with stunning scenery and a spa. Torrenueva is a popular residential area in La Cala with a lovely sandy beach, El Bombo boasting some of the best restaurants in the area, a great destination for a long lunch. If you want to live like a local, head to La Cala’s working market every Wednesday and Sunday, offering fresh produce and general supplies, for the best fruit and veg the coast has to offer.

La Cala is also home to the Cala Mijas festival, a new festival hosting some of the biggest musical talent worldwide with performers such as Arcade Fire and Florence + The Machine. With its proximity to Marbella and Fuengirola and its own full events calendar, there is always something going on to entertain every generation.

Calahonda

Marbella’s municipal boundary meets that of Mijas at Calahonda, it is a pretty zone at the heart of the Costa del Sol, in which rolling hills culminate in picturesque coves dotted with sandy beaches. Golf courses dominate the interior, with many of the area’s villas and apartments arranged around clubs such as Calanova, set amid a wooded, green area.  The area has plenty of amenities, including restaurants, bars, supermarkets, and shops making it a self-contained community and a popular destination for both holiday homes and permanent residences. Calahonda has an abundance of international cuisine on offer, from your traditional Spanish restaurants to English Fish and Chips, for when you are craving a taste of home! Calypso is a popular residential area within Calahonda, as well as Sitio de Calahonda, great places to explore if you are looking for an apartment or townhouse.

Riviera del Sol

A residential area between Calahonda and La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol is known for its stunning views across the Med Sea and its laid-back atmosphere, perfect for families. With easy road access in both directions, to Marbella and Fuengirola and a beautiful beach it is oriented towards foreign residents and visitors. Riviera del Sol itself is compact enough to walk around, down the picturesque tree lined streets or along the sandy beach, with its own selection of bars and restaurants to choose from.
