San Pedro

A few kilometres west of Marbella you will find the charming town of San Pedro de Alcantara, offering visitors a more relaxed and authentic experience, away from the hustle and bustle of the larger tourist hotspots. Situated at the foot of the Sierra de las Nieves Mountain range with the Guadalmina River running through it. Smaller than Marbella it still has a lot to offer; beautiful beaches, a town square and a newly developed boulevard connecting the seaside promenade and the village itself.

What to Do

San Pedro offers a glimpse into life in “traditional” Spain, a peaceful village with a sense of community. The heart of San Pedro is its picturesque Old Town, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses. Here you can stroll the streets for hours admiring the architecture, perhaps stopping for a coffee or beer at one of the many tapas bars that line the main street. The San Pedro Market which takes place on a Thursday is a great place to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, and cured meats. There are also several stalls selling handmade crafts and souvenirs, making it the perfect place to pick up some gifts for loved ones back home. The town is also a popular destination for golfers, with several world-class golf courses nearby, including Real Club de Golf Guadalmina, one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the region.

History

The town has a rich history dating back to the Roman era, and there are several interesting archaeological sites to visit now, each telling a piece of the story that makes up San Pedro itself. The Roman baths, which were discovered in the 1990s, have been restored and opened to the public, where you can see the remains of the hot and cold rooms. Most notably is The Iglesia de San Pedro, a beautiful church located in centre of town, built in the 17th century and featuring a stunning baroque façade. Surrounding the church is a lively square with several cafes and restaurants, making it the perfect place to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat.

Beaches

San Pedro is home to several beautiful beaches, including the Playa de San Pedro, a long stretch of sandy beach with crystal-clear waters. As well as enjoying waters-ports such as paddle-boarding and windsurfing, there are many beach bars for a refreshing drink or delicious meal. A well-maintained boardwalk serves San Pedro along the beach, which reaches Marbella and beyond and is dotted with beach bars, for a glass of wine overlooking the Mediterranean, and outdoor gym areas for those more active. All the family can enjoy the beach in San Pedro, with Playa Ventura Del Mar offering a large dog friendly beach, so your pooch can sunbathe and swim too, whilst roaming free.

Dining

San Pedro is known for its delicious traditional cuisine, which includes fresh seafood and meat dishes. Local specialties include Espetos, skewered sardines grilled over an open fire, and Gazpacho, a cold soup made with tomatoes, peppers, and garlic, the perfect dish to cool off from the endless sunshine. For an authentic experience try El Bodegon, a family-run restaurant that has been serving traditional Andalusian dishes for over 30 years.

Natural Environment

San Pedro is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A haven for hikers, offering breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. There are also several bike trails that wind through the park, making it a popular spot for mountain bikers. Rio Verde is another natural attraction, a beautiful river that flows through a gorge, where you can swim and relax in the crystal-clear waters, why not take a picnic and make a day of it?

Festivals

Home of the Feria de San Pedro, a week-long celebration in June that includes traditional music, dance, and food. Locals and visitors come together to party late into the evening.
