Torremolinos

Torremolinos has a rich and fascinating history from its “tourist inception” in the 1950s. After opening to the European tourist market, Torremolinos was transformed from a modest fishing village next door to Malaga, into a booming seaside town with great appeal and fantastic transport links.

From its humble beginnings, Torremolinos has a proud fishing heritage, and this is evident in the fact that some of the original fish bars still exist to this day. The wide promenade runs from Malaga through Torremolinos all the way to neighbouring Benalmadena and offers a wide array of traditional Spanish chiringuitos to dine in along the sea front. The notorious English-centric natures of the bars and restaurants isn’t so evident anymore, with a Spanish reclaim, well under way. Competition means that relative to much of the Costa del Sol, it represents great value for money.

Transport

Being less than 15 minutes from Malaga Airport, Torremolinos offers great transport links both nationally and internationally. Local buses connect you to other towns and cities in the region, including popular spots such as Marbella and the train station connects it to further afield cities in Spain, including Madrid and Barcelona, making Torremolinos a great base to explore what wider Spain has to offer.

Activities

While there are beaches all the way along the coast, the area of La Carihuela hosts a vibrant beach scene with the best seafood restaurants in town. Playa de Banjodillo is a quieter beach offering a relaxing place to soak up the sun and sea, and Playamar is suited to families with children with its long sandy stretch of beach to build endless sandcastles. Entertain the children with a visit to the crocodile park, the garden of eagles and of course, Aqualand Torremolinos for the essential water park visit. If you prefer to escape the busy crowds, head up to the surrounding mountain range, Sierra de Mijas, to explore the tranquil natural environment and take in the breath-taking views as you hike.

History & Culture

Torremolinos’ origins and name derive from a watchtower (torre) and the mills (molinos), reflecting its history of wheat milling; in mills harnessing hydraulic power generated by the sea. To defend this industry the coast was fortified with castles and defensive towers, some of which you can still see today, such as the Torre de Pimentel, which is a 14th-century tower that was once part of a larger fortress. You can also visit the Casa de los Navajas, a beautiful palace dating back to the early 20th century.

Drinking and dining

Torremolinos is well-known for its Mediterranean cuisine, which is characterized by fresh seafood, olive oil, and vegetables. The area also offers a great array of international restaurants, so you will never be lost for something new to try. In more traditional Spanish restaurants you will find all the classic Mediterranean favourites such as paella, gazpacho, and even churros; sweet crispy fried choux pastry, dipped in a decadent hot chocolate sauce, the ultimate sweet treat when on the coast! Plaza de Andalucía is the perfect place for a stroll in the evening to find some delicious food and drinks. Famous for its vibrant nightlife, the town has a wide range of bars, clubs, and restaurants that cater to all tastes and budgets. San Miguel is a popular pedestrian street with many bars and restaurants, Rockin’ Race Jamboree is a festival held in Torremolinos for over 30 years, where you can see over 40 rock, blues and boogie bands from across Europe and the USA annually.
